Join Our Team as an Engineering Assistant at Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine – A Hands-On Role Building a Brighter Future in South African Mining
Are you a practical, hands-on person who thrives in a dynamic environment, loves solving real-world problems, and wants to contribute to one of South Africa’s vital industries? Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine (SBPM), also known as Union Mine, is offering a fantastic permanent opportunity for an Engineering Assistant (Reference No: 5653). This is more than just a job — it’s your chance to start or grow a meaningful career in mining, gain valuable technical skills, and be part of a team that powers the world with platinum group metals while uplifting communities.
About Siyanda Bakgatla Platinum Mine
Located in the heart of South Africa’s mining regions, our operations span the Limpopo and North West Provinces, with our Head Office based in the bustling business hub of Rosebank, Johannesburg. We produce platinum along with valuable by-products like palladium, rhodium, gold, and chrome. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to creating lasting value beyond mining. We focus on safety, environmental responsibility, innovation, and community development.
As a company, we believe in affirmative action and transformation. Historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSA) will be given preference in line with our Employment Equity Policy. We’re not just ticking boxes — we’re actively building an inclusive workplace where talent from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute to South Africa’s economic growth.
Why This Role Matters
Mining is the backbone of many South African communities. As an Engineering Assistant, you won’t just be a support worker — you’ll be an essential part of keeping our operations running smoothly, safely, and efficiently. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys variety, physical work, problem-solving, and seeing the direct impact of their efforts. In a mine environment, every shift contributes to production targets, safety records, and ultimately, the livelihoods of thousands. You’ll work in a team-oriented setting where learning never stops, and your contributions help maintain “Zero Tolerance” for non-compliance with safety and quality standards.
What You’ll Do Day-to-Day (Expanded Responsibilities)
Your work will be varied and rewarding.
- Operational Support: Step in wherever needed to assist in critical areas of the mine’s engineering operations. This could mean helping during peak times, troubleshooting minor issues on the spot, or ensuring smooth workflow for your assigned Artisan team.
- Refurbishment Work: Assist in the refurbishment of reclaimed equipment. This is satisfying work — taking older or used machinery, restoring it to working condition, and giving it new life, which supports sustainability goals by reducing waste and costs.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely under the guidance of experienced Artisans and supervisors. This is a great learning environment where you’ll build practical skills across mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines.
Whether you’re on surface or supporting underground operations, you’ll experience the pulse of a working mine — the hum of machinery, the satisfaction of a well-maintained site, and the camaraderie of a close-knit team.
Who We’re Looking For
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and Science.

- At least 6 months of relevant engineering experience. This could come from mining, manufacturing, maintenance, or a similar technical field. Even entry-level hands-on work counts if it shows your aptitude.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Semi-skilled experience with various engineering certificates is a big advantage (e.g., welding, fitting, basic fabrication, or trade-related short courses).
- Strong communication skills in English — you’ll need to understand instructions clearly, report issues, and work effectively in a team.
- Physical fitness and willingness to work in a mining environment (including shift work where required).

We value reliability, a positive mindset, and eagerness to learn. If you’re someone who takes initiative, works well under supervision, and wants to grow within a supportive company, this could be the perfect fit.
