To be considered for this critical role, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Educational Attainment: A Grade 12 Certificate or its equivalent, such as an N3 Certificate, is mandatory. This foundational education ensures the candidate possesses the basic literacy and numeracy skills necessary for understanding instructions and performing routine tasks.
  • Blue Drop Requirements: While not strictly mandatory, completion of a Water Treatment Learnership is a significant advantage. This specialized training demonstrates a foundational understanding of water treatment processes and regulatory standards, which aligns perfectly with Rand Water’s commitment to Blue Drop compliance and the highest water quality.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year of cleaning experience, particularly in an industrial or plant environment, will be a distinct advantage. Candidates with prior experience will be better equipped to understand the demands of maintaining cleanliness in sensitive operational areas.
  • Essential Skills: Proven communication and numeracy skills are highly desired. The ability to clearly convey information and understand basic numerical data is crucial for reporting, following instructions, and assisting with plant operations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Plant General Assistant plays a multi-faceted role, encompassing both routine maintenance and critical operational support. Key responsibilities include:

  • Plant Cleanliness and Hygiene: The core responsibility involves maintaining exemplary cleanliness and hygiene standards across the entire water treatment plant. This includes, but is not limited to, the meticulous cleaning of floors, surfaces, and equipment in designated areas.
  • Allocated Section Management: Proactively and diligently clean specific sections of the plant as assigned by the shift supervisor, ensuring all areas meet Rand Water’s stringent cleanliness protocols.
  • Safety Reporting and Vigilance: Act as a front-line safety advocate. Promptly identify and report any unsafe conditions, hazardous situations, or potentially dangerous acts observed within the plant to the shift supervisor without delay. This proactive approach is fundamental to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Operational Assistance (Pumps): Provide crucial support to the Process Controller by assisting with the controlled loading and unloading of pumps. This involves understanding operational procedures and following instructions precisely to ensure seamless transitions.
  • Valve Operations: Execute the opening and closing of suction and delivery valves as directed, adhering to strict safety protocols and operational guidelines. This task requires careful attention to detail and an understanding of flow paths.
  • Water Sample Collection: Accurately collect water samples from designated points within the plant. This task is vital for ongoing water quality monitoring and analysis, contributing directly to ensuring the safety of our water supply.
  • Manual Valve Isolation: Perform the manual operation of pipeline isolating valves when required. This demands a keen understanding of the plant’s layout and the ability to execute precise movements.
  • Chemical Unloading (Chlorine): Assist with the careful and safe unloading of chlorine drums, adhering to all established safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. This task is performed under strict supervision due to the hazardous nature of the chemical.
  • Chemical Unloading (Ammonia): Similarly, assist with the secure and controlled unloading of ammonia, again following all safety guidelines and utilizing appropriate PPE.
  • Relevant Cleaning Experience: Prior experience in industrial or specialized cleaning environments will be a significant advantage, demonstrating an understanding of the unique challenges and requirements of maintaining hygiene in a critical infrastructure setting.

Knowledge

While prior specialized knowledge is not strictly mandated, certain areas of understanding will significantly enhance a candidate’s effectiveness:
