As a vital member of our logistics and supply chain team, the Picker plays a crucial and dynamic role in ensuring the seamless flow of products from our warehouse to our valued customers. The main purpose of this position is to accurately and efficiently select, retrieve, and meticulously prepare stock for dispatch within our fast-paced warehouse and distribution environment. This multifaceted role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including the precise locating of products according to order specifications, ensuring correct quantities and item details are met with unwavering attention, and ultimately, completing customer orders both on time and in full.
The Picker’s daily activities are diverse and require a keen eye for detail and a commitment to operational excellence. This includes the proficient operation of various material-handling equipment, such as pallet jacks, as well as performing manual picking where required, demonstrating both agility and physical capability. Crucially, the Picker is expected to adhere strictly to all established safety protocols and handling procedures, safeguarding both themselves and our valuable inventory. Furthermore, Pickers are instrumental in maintaining the integrity of our inventory system by accurately scanning and recording all stock movements, promptly reporting any discrepancies or anomalies, and continuously striving to maintain an organized, clean, and efficient work area. The paramount importance of accuracy and efficiency in this role cannot be overstated, as these qualities are absolutely essential for supporting smooth and optimized warehouse operations, minimizing errors, and ultimately guaranteeing the highest level of customer satisfaction.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications:
- Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent national qualification: A solid educational foundation is required, demonstrating a basic level of literacy, numeracy, and comprehension necessary to understand and execute job duties effectively, including reading order forms and safety instructions.
Experience:
- 1–2 years’ demonstrable experience in a similar role within a warehousing, distribution, or logistics setting: Candidates should possess proven experience as a Picker, Warehouse Operative, or a comparable position. This experience should include practical knowledge of order fulfillment processes, stock management, and adherence to warehouse safety guidelines. Familiarity with various picking methodologies (e.g., batch picking, zone picking) and warehouse layouts is highly advantageous. Prior experience operating material handling equipment, even if basic, will be a significant asset.
Skills & General Requirements:
- Good verbal and written communication skills: The ability to clearly and concisely convey information, understand instructions, and communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments is essential. This includes being able to report issues, ask clarifying questions, and participate in team discussions. Written communication skills are important for accurately completing documentation and interpreting labels.
- Ability to follow procedures and work accurately: A strong aptitude for meticulous work and strict adherence to established operational procedures, safety regulations, and quality standards is fundamental. This includes carefully checking product codes, quantities, and ensuring that all items selected match the order specifications. An unwavering commitment to minimizing errors and maintaining high standards of quality in all tasks is expected.
- Ability to work shifts, including weekends and night shifts: The nature of our operations requires flexibility and a willingness to work according to a rotating shift schedule, which may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and public holidays. Candidates must be reliable and capable of maintaining performance standards across various work times.
- Able to work in a cold environment: This role involves working in temperature-controlled sections of the warehouse, which may be consistently cold or refrigerated. Candidates must be comfortable and able to perform duties effectively in such conditions, wearing appropriate thermal gear if provided.
- Physical Stamina and Dexterity: The role requires a good level of physical fitness, including the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull various items, often weighing up to [Specify weight, e.g., 25 kg] regularly throughout a shift. It also involves standing, walking, bending, reaching, and performing repetitive tasks for extended periods. Equipment Operation:
- Operation of a motorised pallet jack (1.): Proficient and safe operation of a motorised pallet jack is a core requirement for this position. Candidates must either possess current certification/licensing or demonstrate the aptitude and willingness to be trained and certified in its safe and efficient operation immediately upon employment. This includes understanding pre-operation checks, safe load handling, and adherence to all operational safety guidelines for such equipment. Further training on other warehouse equipment may be provided based on operational needs.
