Operator (Paint)

Full Job Description: Aircraft Preparation Technician

Job Purpose:

The Aircraft Preparation Technician plays a critical and foundational role in ensuring the integrity and aesthetic excellence of our fleet. This position is responsible for the meticulous final preparation of aircraft and their components prior to the application of paint strip or fresh paint. This demanding yet rewarding role requires a keen eye for detail, a commitment to safety, and proficiency in utilizing both traditional hand tools and advanced pneumatic machinery, such as orbital sanders, to achieve a perfectly prepared surface. The quality of work performed directly impacts the longevity of the paint finish, the overall appearance of the aircraft, and ultimately, our brand reputation.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Perform Comprehensive Preparation of Aircraft and Parts: This involves a multi-faceted approach to readying surfaces. Technicians will be responsible for disassembling, cleaning, and degreasing surfaces to remove contaminants, old paint, corrosion, and other imperfections. This may involve chemical stripping, pressure washing, and meticulous hand cleaning of intricate components.
  • Precision Sanding and Masking: Utilizing a range of sanding techniques, from abrasive blasting to fine-grit orbital sanding, the technician will achieve the desired surface profile for optimal paint adhesion. This requires a deep understanding of different materials and their specific sanding requirements. Equally crucial is the precise application of masking materials (tapes, covers, sealants) to protect areas not intended for stripping or painting, such as windows, sensors, and critical structural components. Imperfections in masking can lead to costly rework and potential damage.
  • Acknowledge Receipt and Monitor Movement of Work in Progress: Maintaining an organized and efficient workflow is paramount. The technician will be responsible for accurately acknowledging the receipt of aircraft or components into the preparation bay. This includes verifying part numbers, inspecting for initial damage, and documenting arrival times. Throughout the preparation process, they will actively monitor the status and movement of these items, ensuring they progress through the various stages of preparation efficiently and are ready for the next phase (e.g., paint stripping, primer application). This proactive approach minimizes bottlenecks and optimizes operational efficiency.
  • Complete and Sign All Relevant Documentation: Adherence to strict regulatory and internal quality standards is non-negotiable. The technician will meticulously complete all required documentation, including work orders, quality control checklists, material usage logs, and safety records. Each completed task must be signed off, ensuring traceability and accountability for every step of the preparation process. Accurate record-keeping is vital for audits, maintenance history, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with General Hangar and Workshop Housekeeping: A clean and organized workspace is essential for safety, efficiency, and quality. This responsibility extends beyond individual workstations to encompass the entire preparation area.
    • Cleaning of Work Area/Equipment: Regularly cleaning and maintaining all tools, equipment, and the general work environment to prevent contamination, ensure operational readiness, and promote a safe working atmosphere. This includes proper disposal of hazardous waste and debris.
    • Equipment, Spares, and Material Movement: Assisting with the safe and efficient movement and storage of various equipment, spare parts, and preparation materials within the hangar and workshop. This may involve operating forklifts or other material handling equipment, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Assist Technicians with General Preparation: Collaborating with other technicians and teams, providing support where needed in tasks related to the overall aircraft preparation process. This could involve supporting paint technicians, corrosion control specialists, or other maintenance personnel, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Grade 12 or Equivalent: A strong educational foundation is required, demonstrating basic literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills.
  • PC Literate: Proficiency in basic computer operations, including email, word processing, and data entry, is essential for completing digital documentation and accessing company systems. Experience with specialized maintenance software is a plus.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Have Knowledge of the SAA Technical Organisation: A fundamental understanding of SAA Technical’s organizational structure, departmental functions, safety policies, and operational procedures is crucial for effective integration into the team.
  • Have Inter-Personal Skills: The ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, and other departments is vital. This includes active listening, clear verbal communication, and the capacity to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Have Knowledge of Hazardous Material/Chemicals: A comprehensive understanding of the safe handling, storage, disposal, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for various hazardous materials and chemicals used in aircraft preparation (e.g., paint strippers, solvents, primers). This includes familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS) and emergency procedures.
  • Communication Skills (Verbal and Written): The ability to articulate information clearly and concisely, both verbally during team briefings and in written form when completing documentation or reporting issues. This includes the capacity to understand and follow complex instructions.

Attributes:

  • Demonstrate the SAA Values:
    • Customer Focus: Prioritizing the needs of both internal and external customers, ensuring that all work contributes to delivering a safe, reliable, and visually appealing aircraft.
    • Accountability: Taking ownership of tasks, responsibilities, and outcomes, consistently meeting deadlines and quality standards.
    • Integrity: Upholding the highest ethical standards in all actions and decisions, fostering trust and transparency.
    • Safety: Maintaining a proactive and vigilant approach to safety, adhering strictly to all safety protocols and procedures to protect oneself and others.
    • Excellence In Performance: Striving for the highest quality in all aspects of work, continuously seeking ways to improve processes and outcomes.
    • Valuing Our People: Treating colleagues with respect, fostering a positive work environment, and supporting team success.
  • Self-Motivated: Possessing a strong internal drive to complete tasks efficiently and to a high standard, even when working independently. Proactively identifying and addressing challenges.
  • Team Player: Demonstrating a collaborative spirit, actively contributing to team goals, supporting colleagues, and working effectively within a diverse group.

Additional Information:
