Entry-Level Electrician (Apprentice)

As an Entry-Level Electrician, you will play a crucial supporting role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various electrical systems within residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Your primary responsibility will be to assist experienced electricians in all facets of their work, contributing to the successful completion of projects while strictly adhering to all relevant building codes, safety regulations, and industry best practices.

This apprenticeship-style role is designed for those committed to learning and developing their skills. Under the close supervision and mentorship of a licensed Journeyman Electrician, you will receive hands-on training and theoretical instruction in fundamental electrical principles. Key areas of learning will include:

  • Basic Electrical Theory: Understanding concepts such as voltage, current, resistance, and power, as well as the principles of AC/DC circuits.
  • Blueprint Reading and Interpretation: Learning to decipher electrical schematics, floor plans, and technical drawings to understand system layouts and wiring paths.
  • Proper Wiring Techniques: Developing proficiency in cutting, stripping, bending, and connecting various types of electrical wires and cables, ensuring secure and compliant connections.
  • Tool Usage and Safety: Familiarizing yourself with a wide array of electrical tools, equipment, and testing devices, and learning how to use them safely and effectively.
  • Troubleshooting Fundamentals: Gaining an initial understanding of how to identify and diagnose common electrical issues.
  • Material Identification: Learning to recognize and differentiate between various electrical components, conduits, fixtures, and devices.

Beyond these core learning areas, your daily tasks will involve a variety of hands-on responsibilities, which may include:

  • Assisting with the installation of wiring, conduits, outlets, switches, light fixtures, and other electrical components.
  • Helping to connect power to various electrical equipment and appliances.
  • Carrying and organizing tools, materials, and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Cleaning and preparing work areas, ensuring a safe and organized environment.
  • Performing basic maintenance tasks on existing electrical systems under direct supervision.
  • Observing and learning from experienced electricians as they diagnose and resolve complex electrical problems.
  • Participating in safety briefings and ensuring strict adherence to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

While not strictly mandatory for initial application, a valid driver’s license is a significant advantage and highly preferred for this role. It demonstrates reliability, independence, and the potential to transport equipment and travel to various job sites as you progress in your training.

This is a Part-time position, offering flexibility and an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience while potentially pursuing further education or other commitments.

Pay: R35.00 – R50.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and demonstrated aptitude.

License/Certification:

  • Drivers license (Required): As mentioned, this is a strong preference and will be a key factor in consideration, reflecting the practical demands of the role.
