Location: Brakpan, Gauteng | Division: Gedex — Conventional Engineering
Employment Type: Permanent | Experience Level: Mid–Senior
Posted: 24 June 2026 | Closing Date: 05 July 2026

Overview
Gold One Group’s Gedex Conventional Engineering team is looking for an experienced Pump Fitter to join our Brakpan operations. This hands-on role focuses on the maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting and repair of pump systems and associated mechanical equipment used across our mining operations. The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical trade skills, practical fault-finding experience in a trackless mining environment, and a safety-first attitude. The role requires shift work, flexibility for standbys and callouts, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Why this role matters
Pumps are essential to dewatering, slurry handling, pressing circuits, and hydraulic systems throughout the mine. Reliable pump performance minimizes unplanned downtime, reduces operational risk, and keeps production moving. As a Pump Fitter, you will be directly responsible for ensuring equipment availability and integrity — your work supports operational continuity, safety, and cost-effective maintenance.

Main responsibilities

  • Inspect, disassemble, reassemble and repair all types of pump systems and associated mechanical components. Ensure parts are fitted correctly and reassembled to specification.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance tasks to preserve pump performance and extend equipment life, including alignment, bearing replacement, seal changes, and lubrication.
  • Conduct detailed troubleshooting and fault analysis to diagnose mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic issues. Implement practical corrective actions quickly and safely.
  • Apply specialist knowledge of pumps, pneumatics and hydraulic systems to resolve complex technical problems, reduce repeat failures and improve system reliability.
  • Carry out quality control and verification checks on repaired equipment, following engineering standards and manufacturer specifications.
  • Follow supervisor instructions for shift-specific tasks and escalate unresolved issues to engineering leads when needed.
  • Work planned shift rotations and be available for standby duties and emergency callouts as required by operational demands.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, faults found, parts used and recommendations for further action.
  • Comply with MHSA standards and adhere to Gold One’s safety motto: “Nothing is so important that it cannot be done safely.” Participate in safety briefings and hazard reporting.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Trade Test: Fitter or Fitter and Turner — trade certification is essential.
  • 2–3 years’ post-qualification experience, preferably within a trackless mining environment. Experience working with hydropower drilling systems is advantageous.
  • Proven experience with general pump systems and a strong working understanding of pneumatics and hydraulic circuits.
  • Competence in reading technical drawings, maintenance manuals and service instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform thorough mechanical fault diagnosis and carry out repairs to a high standard.
  • Valid South African driver’s license (Code 8–10) — essential.
  • South African citizenship.
  • Clear criminal record.

Desired skills and personal attributes

  • Strong hands-on mechanical ability with careful attention to detail and quality.
  • Good problem-solving skills, able to apply independent judgement and initiative when diagnosing faults.
  • Effective communicator, able to write concise fault reports and communicate clearly with supervisors and teammates.
  • Physically fit and able to work in a mining environment, including confined spaces where necessary and under varied weather conditions.
  • Flexible and dependable — prepared to work shifts, standbys and emergency callouts.
  • Team-oriented attitude with the ability to follow instructions, support colleagues, and contribute to a positive safety culture.

Work environment and conditions

  • The role is based at Gold One’s Brakpan facility and operates in a trackless mining environment with heavy-duty mechanical and hydraulic equipment.
  • Shift work is required; candidates must be willing to work rotating shifts and participate in standby rosters and callout duties.
  • The position involves regular manual handling, use of lifting equipment, and working with power tools and diagnostic instruments.
  • Strict adherence to PPE requirements, safety procedures, and MHSA regulations is mandatory.

What we offer

  • Practical, hands-on work on critical mining equipment within a reputable mining company.
  • A supportive engineering team and clear safety-focused culture.
  • Opportunities to develop specialist skills in pumps, pneumatics and hydraulics, and exposure to hydropower drilling systems where applicable.
  • Competitive remuneration and defined shift structures, with the potential for overtime and standby allowances in line with company policy.
